About National Youth Leadership Training

Training of the youth leaders of a unit is important in helping the individual Scout and the Troop or Crew grow. The Boy Scouts of America has developed a weeklong training experience that has proven very valuable in the training of youth leaders. The Alameda and Los Padres Councils are offering the NYLT Courses at Camp Lindblad, Boulder Creek, California for Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Varsity Scouts.

The Course will stress two areas of benefits to youth leaders:

  • Outdoor living skills and how they can be passed on to the other members of the troop or crew and patrol,
  • The leadership skills that will make the youth leader more effective in their job.

National Youth Leadership Training is a seven-day outdoor experience for leaders in support of the Scoutmaster's or Advisor's responsibility for training of a troop's or crew's youth leaders. The course is set up to represent a month in the life of a typical troop or crew. Participants will sleep in tents, prepare their own meals by patrols, and will be expected to live by the Scout Oath and Law. Failure to do so may result in removal from camp.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

NYLT is a six-day course. During the program the participants are exposed to leadership techniques. They learn how to create a vision of success, set goals and make plans, listen and solve problems, and teach and lead. They learn about why it is important to put others' needs first if you want to be an effective leader. They are given opportunities to apply the Scout Oath and Law to make hard decisions and how to remain true to Scouting's values.
